Why the five-page brochure site never happens

Someone quoted you four thousand pounds and six weeks. Someone else's nephew started one and got as far as the header. There's a half-built site on a builder you can't remember the login for, and in the meantime the real website is a Facebook page, where the opening hours have been wrong since the bank holiday and a customer has just messaged to ask if you're open.

The thing is, almost nobody arrives at a small business website to read. They arrive with one of four questions — what do you do, where are you, when are you open, how do I reach you — and they are standing outside in the rain holding a phone. A site that answers those four things in one screen beats a beautiful five-page brochure with a blog nobody writes and a contact form that quietly stopped emailing anyone in March.

So build the small version. Describe the business, get a link, put it on the van, the card, and the Google listing. When the hours change for Christmas you change them yourself, in less time than it takes to text the nephew — and it costs you an afternoon instead of a quarter.

Questions

Can I use my own domain name?
Yes. Alongside the free buildanything.com address, paid plans let you put your app on a custom domain like myapp.com. You can buy a brand-new domain right inside Build Anything, or connect one you already own.
Can I take payments or bookings?
You can collect booking and quote requests by email straight away. Taking card payments needs a payment provider, which is a bigger setup.
Will customers find it on Google?
It's a real public web page, so search engines can reach it. For a local business what does the work is having the plain facts in the text — what you do, the areas you cover, your address and phone number — and a Google Business Profile pointing at the link. Mention your trade and your town when you describe it so they end up in the words on the page.
Can I change my opening hours myself?
Yes, and without waiting on anybody. Ask for the hours somewhere you can edit them and changing the bank holiday closing is a minute's work. If you'd rather never touch it, ask for hours that work themselves out from the clock and say Open now or Closed until 9.
Will it look like a real business or like a template?
That is mostly down to what you give it. Your colours, your name, real photographs of the actual place and the words you'd use with a customer will get you something that looks like yours. Starting from a template on your trade and describing what's different about you is usually quicker than starting from nothing.
